Music in me

I've said it before, I'll say it again.  I'm pretty sure I was a black background singer in some past life, regardless of the fact I don't subscribe to that belief system.  Deep in my soul, all black 'n bluesy, rock 'n rolly and nurtured by the greats... the Temptations, the Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Melvin & the Bluenotes, Barry White, Aretha Franklin, Ottis Redding, Gladys Knight & the Pips, the Staple Singers, the Supremes, etc., etc.  The list goes on and on.  It's crazy, I know.  I am but a wee white girl, with skin the color of uber pale, who can barely hold a note.  Still, the music just moves me like none other.  Could be an internal uprising against some of the mind numbing radio play that is synthesized and auto-tuned into something barely recognizable and blatantly promoted as 'art'.  No, I can't handle manufactured musicians.  Oh, and guess what... we have yet another Ms. Spears album on the horizon.  (Just saying that made me throw up in my mouth a little.)  Painfully painful pain-pain.   There are just no words...

I've often thought I could tell my entire life story with songs, be it with titles, or pieces of the song verse & chorus.  Certainly could dictate what I was doing or who I was with around particular songs.  For example, my 13th birthday was Jackson 5 (I Want You Back) and the 5th Dimension (Blowin' Away); Jr. High was all about Elton John, Sr. High was lived to Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) and Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd), I walked down the aisle to the theme from "Tootsie" (It Might be You) and... well, you get the picture.  In this I am confident I am not alone.  Just goes to show you what an impact music can have on someone.  So, I ask you... why do you think that is?  Is it in the melody? Or the poetry of the lyrics?  Or is it in combining the two that creates magic?  There's probably a thousand different opinions of which ingredients make the most memorable cake, yet they all come out tasting just as sweet.

I have such high regard for artists, whatever their medium is.   The ability to pull out ones heart and soul and describe it visually or verbally... well, it amazes me.  I am fortunate to have artists in my family.  Sisters, nieces, nephew, in-laws... all have amazing talents.  While my oldest son writes,  my other son is a singer, and I just get goosebumps when I hear him perform.  I think there is a special place in heaven for these gifted souls.

And so, though I don't sing, dance, paint, etc., I have such an affinity for these things that I surely must have some of those genes floating around somewhere in my pool.  I know one thing fo' sho... I play a mean 'egg' shaker!

I'm praying that will be enough to get me into God's band.
